Threshing show draws crowd

![]() The 2007 show, which featured International Harvester/Farmall tractors, attracted a record 180 vintage machines. Farms today are large and the equipment used to work them are equally large and high-tech. It is easy to forget the type of smaller, simpler machines used just a couple of generations ago. But thanks to antique tractor groups such as one that came together in the Hutchinson area 28 years ago, those memories are still alive. The Heatwole Threshing Association, which takes its name from a crossroads three miles southwest of Hutchinson, will host its 29th annual show Aug. 9-10, 2008. The putt-putt of antique tractors, the whirling of a sawmill saw blade, and the grinding of a threshing machine will greet the ears of visitors to the free show. Association President Corey Henke says his group is hoping for another good turnout this year when Case is the featured tractor. About 90 to 100 tractors typically compete in the tractor pull, which was spread over both days beginning a few years ago. “It relieved a lot of pressure of trying to get all the classes done at a reasonable hour on Sunday,” President Corey Henke said. “Plus, we always have a lot of people who stay around Saturday night anyway for our pork chop and chicken supper and to get a closer look at everything.” Other tractor driving contests include a slow race, barrel roll race, backing and blindfolded driving. Many of the tractors are also in the daily parade. A nondenominational church service and breakfast takes place Sunday morning. Ice cream and sandwiches are available throughout the show. Kids activities are planned both days. Live demonstrations take place both days, including field work, a sawmill, wool spinning, a blacksmith shop, a shingle mill and of course, threshing machines. The association’s 20/40 Rumely Oil Pull tractor also will be operated. If you go Advertising |
