New Century teaches with projects

Students at New Century Charter School experience many activities, such as the time they spent with high school students from Thailand last year.

New Century Charter School serves students in grades 7-12. It is a public school open to everyone.

The curriculum provides a blend of core knowledge in math, science, language arts, social students, health and physical education with a focus on project-based learning as the dominant tool to engage students.

At New Century, students spend the majority of their learning time in a project-based environment where they apply academic skill while taking responsibility for their learning.

Students belong to small, multi-grade level advisory groups in which they work closely with staff and family members in preparing and planning an individual “map” of learning. Advisors are there every step of the way — coaching their students to success.

The school believes in employing the latest technology and emphasizes using technology in students’ everyday lives. New Century also taps into the resources in the Hutchinson community — especially people in area business and industry with expertise and knowledge to share.

Parents and other family members meet with students and advisors to develop a schedule that best fits the pathway the student has chosen. At New Century, parents are an integral part of the team.

The pinnacle of achievement for a New Century student is the senior project, in which students celebrate their accomplishments by presenting a project to the public. Students are encouraged to seek community resources to aid them in developing these projects.
