Marching to a choreographed beat

Hutchinson-area students can enjoy a percussion experience when they join Phoenix Drumline. The drumline participates in competitions during its winter season and marches in parades during its summer season.

Drama and pageantry are two words that come to mind when the Phoenix Drumline is scheduled to perform. With their choreographed routine and matching costumes, the student drumline is a stirring sight.

This Hutchinson-area drumline offers a musical experience for students interested in playing a variety of percussion instruments including snare, tenor and bass drums, cymbals, xylophone, marimba and vibraphone.

Phoenix Drumline is open to students in grades 7 through 12. The program consists of two sections: a summer marching unit that takes place from June through August, and a winter competitive unit that runs from November through March.

The Phoenix Drumline began as a dream of a group of drummers from Hutchinson High School who wanted to organize a competitive drumline.

Parents organized the Crow River Drumline Association and worked to create a community drumline program for students.

The first competition season of the Phoenix Drumline took place in January 1994. It hosted its first local competition, Distant Drums, in February that year.

Phoenix Drumline is operated by the Crow River Drumline Association, a member of the Minnesota Percussion Association, the governing body of competitive drumline activity in Minnesota.
